Why recycle farm plastics?
Legislation in England and Wales means that all wastes on farms are controlled. In line with this legislation, all farmers have a duty of care to dispose of their waste properly.
Our system allows you to transfer your waste to a registered waste carrier. You will be provided with a waste transfer note. These will be needed to prove to regulatory bodies that you have disposed of waste in a suitable manner.
Non compliance with this legislation could endanger your Single Farm Payment.
What is FarmPlas?
It is a network of regional schemes collecting and recycling farm plastic waste.
FarmPlas brings collection schemes together to share best practice and to establish a cost-effective, high quality service for farmers nation-wide.
Who are the collection schemes?
The collection schemes are independent, regional businesses, many of them set up by farmers themselves. As most of the collection schemes are farm-based there is a real understanding of the issues farmers face.
What types of farm plastics are collected?
All farm plastics are collected. For example silage wrap (separated from netting and string), silage sheeting, crop film, poly-tunnel film, feed bags, fertilizer bags, bottles and containers.
What happens to the collected plastic?
All the plastic collected is taken to a recycling plant. Here it is processed and recycled into plastic pellets.
These plastic pellets are then used in the manufacture of farm films and other plastic products.
This recycling technology closes the loop and provides a solution that is truly sustainable.
How much will it cost?
Membership to the FarmPlas scheme is free.
In the majority of cases, the standard collection charge is £100 per tonne, with a minimum charge of £75
There are variations, enabling us to provide a value for money service for all sizes and types of farms. These include negotiated acreage payments, a bulk bag scheme and on-farm baling.
